Category : ACHL Activities / by

The Nigerian Government recently released through the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), the  HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact survey  report which puts the HIV prevalence in Akwa Ibom State at 5.5% as against the national average of 1.4%. Thus Akwa Ibom State is now unenviably the state with a grievous HIV/AIDS burden. Since the report was released, there has been a lot of anxiety about what this portends for a state known for its happy peaceful, cohesive and hardworking people.

As expected, the state has witnessed a flurry of activities and an influx of development partners and a heightened level of response to the epidemic by stakeholders.

A landmark and most welcomed initiative by the stakeholders in the state is the emergence of Akwa Alliance Against AIDS (A4), a volunteer group with sprang up spontaneously consisting of concerned Akwa Ibomites within the state and in the diaspora. The A4 which has about 100 members has in its fold, notable health workers and development professionals, university professors, engineers, architects, legal practitioners and a host of others seeks to intensity advocacy for policy change and increased local funding for HIV/AIDS. It will also contribute to the response through Social and Behavioural Change  activities and other HIV Prevention activities.

ACHL provides technical leadership to the group’s activities and programs while FOMA (Foundation For The Marooned Inc) USA is currently hosting the group. Recently ACHL facilitated the inaugural meeting and a three-day work planning meeting for  the A4 group was held at the at Doctors Mess, Udo Udoma Avenue, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State from the 6th to 8th of May, 2019. The meeting was attended by 70 A4 members, several key development partners, the representatives of the Health Commissioner, the State Agency for the Control of AIDS and the States AIDS Program Coordinator at the Ministry of Health were represented and sent in good will messages

  3. Reached consensus on key thematic areas that will be the focus of the Akwa Alliance Against AIDS (A4) team as they develop activities for implementation
  4. A4 better understood its vision, mission, objectives and capacity and will reach consensus on activities to be implemented over the next 2 years and develop a costed plan for this purpose.
  5. Agreed on resource mobilization approaches and modalities and undertake a partnership mapping.
